Fr Jerry Gunderson, Pastor
On April 26, 2005, the 29th anniversary of my ordination as a deacon, I was named the fifth pastor of Mary, Seat of Wisdom Parish . It is an honor to follow in the footsteps of Christ and the exemplary priests who have shepherded this parish for the past 50 years. This is my first assignment north of Madison Avenue. ( I am a Sox fan) I grew up at St Margaret of Scotland Parish (99th & Throop) on the far south side. At Quigley South, Niles College of Loyola University and St Mary of the Lake Seminary, I completed my studies and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1976. I have experienced a wide variety of ministries in assignments from the inner city to nearby suburbs. My first assignment was St Agatha (Douglas and Kedzie, Chicago) From 1981-1992, I had to opportunity to serve as co-pastor and a member of a pastoral team at St James (29th & Wabash, Chicago). This experience has greatly shaped my view of ministry. I also served as pastor of St Mary Riverside (1992-2004). I spent brief periods in temporary assignments at St Mary Star of the Sea (Chicago) and St Luke (River Forest). I believe that the Holy Spirit gathers folks to share their experiences of faith and that the Holy Spirit continues to speak through this sharing of experiences. Together with church leaders ordained and lay the community discerns the voice of the Holy Spirit calling us to be church. I strive to practice the Christian virtue of hospitality as I work with the leadership of the parish to create an environment where “All are welcome.” I am currently privileged to be working with a strong pastoral team and talented parish leadership groups
