BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY
 
 
 
I. MISSION STATEMENT (brief statement of purpose)

 
The MISSION of the BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY is to be a supportive presence to the families of the deceased by providing them emotional and spiritual support at the time of death and then to follow up with them afterwards.
 
II. GOAL (“end-product” …desired outcome for those to whom ministry is directed)
 
The GOAL of the BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY is for families of the deceased to experience God’s healing love through the parish’s active outreach and support.
 
III. OBJECTIVES (corollaries, strategies, priorities flowing from mission and goal)
1. To establish a coordinating committee to provide for representation on the commission, leadership succession, and implementation of mission, goal and objectives.
2. For ministers to have an awareness of their link with the mystery of Christ and of being channels of his grace to comfort, console and bring the gift of hope to those who grieve.
3. Develop strategies for reaching out to families of the deceased not only prior to the burial but at planned intervals afterwards.
4. interact with clergy to provide liturgies and opportunities for worship for families of the deceased.
 
IV. SERVICES (programs, actions, projects)
1. Contact with families of the deceased prior to the burial to assist as needed in preparation of the funeral liturgy, wake services, etc.
2. Followup phone calls, visits and letters to family members for a one year period.
3. Provide food for the family of the deceased in the immediate period following the death, if the family so desires.
4. Plan special liturgy in October for persons who have experienced the death of a child.
5. Plan special liturgy on All Souls Day for all deceased parish members who died the past year, as well as for anyone from former years for whom a request was made.
6. Plan to provide in the future a grief support group for parishioners who have lost a loved one.
