LECTORS MINISTRY

I. MISSION STATEMENT (brief statement of purpose)

The MISSION of the LECTORS MINISTRY is to proclaim the Word of God to the worshiping community by bringing the various elements of the Liturgy of the Word into such harmony that Christ speaks to the assembly through them.

II. GOAL (“end-product” …desired outcome for those to whom ministry is targeted)

The GOAL of the LECTORS MINISTRY is for worshippers to experience in the Liturgy of the Word the Christ who “is present in his word, since it is he himself who speaks when holy scriptures are read in the church.” (Vatican Council II, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, art. 7)

III. OBJECTIVES (corollaries, strategies, priorities flowing out of mission and goal)
1. To form a coordinating team to provide for representation on the commission, a method for leadership succession and implementation of ministry’s mission, goal and objectives.
2. To train lectors to proclaim scripture readings with greater joy and energy, using proper public speaking techniques and a faith-awareness that as readers of the holy scriptures in a liturgical setting, lectors stand in the place of Christ.
3. For readers to prepare the holy scriptures with care by using preparation guides, reflecting on its personal message for them, rehearsing the reading - and, if possible, memorizing part or all of it to be able to have more immediate contact with the worshippers.

IV. SERVICES (programs, actions, projects)
1. Recruitment and training of parishioners to serve as lectors.
2. Scheduling and assignments.
3. Acting as scripture readers at liturgical services.
4. On-going formation and education of lectors on the spirituality and faith dimensions of this ministry, with emphasis on understanding the implications of living out the mystery of Christ.
