Ministry Profile
GREETERS & USHERS MINISTRIES
I. MISSION STATEMENT (brief statement
of purpose)
The MISSION of the GREETERS & USHERS
MINISTRIES is to contribute to establishing
a sense of community in liturgical celebrations
by welcoming people through friendly
hospitality. Greeters make a first welcome
to worshippers as they come into the
worship space. Ushers continue this
hospitality and help develop a sense
of order as they carry out their duties.
II. GOAL (“end-product”
…desired outcome for those to
whom ministry is directed)
The GOAL of the GREETERS & USHERS
MINISTRIES is for parishioners to be
aware of the ecclesial nature of Catholic
worship, so that the hospitality of
greeters & ushers helps make parishioners
aware that Sunday worship is not
an individual matter apart from others,
but a call to join together in praising
and giving thanks to God.
III. OBJECTIVES (corollaries,
strategies, priorities flowing from
mission and goal)
1. To establish a core team for each
ministry to assist coordinators with
recruitment, training, leadership succession,
commission representation, and implementation
of ministry’s objectives.
2. For those serving as greeters and
ushers to be persons with grateful hearts,
who follow the biblical mandate, “Out
of love, put yourself at the service
of others.”
3. For greeters and ushers prior to
the beginning of Mass, to be proactive
in fostering a friendly, hospitable
environment, being alert to people’s
needs, extending friendly handshakes,
learning their names, introducing people,
noticing visitors and welcoming them.
4. As duties permit, for ushers to take
an active part with the congregation
in all prayers, singing and ritual actions,
showing reverence and modeling prayerfulness
for the congregation.
5. To develop strategies of on-going
recruitment for both ministries, seeking
age variations.
IV. SERVICES (programs, actions,
projects)
1. Recruiting, scheduling and training
both greeters and ushers to perform
their tasks in a hospitable and orderly
manner.
2. Ushers maintaining a sense of order
and hospitality throughout the liturgical
celebration, especially (a) when assisting
late comers to help them avoid disturbing
the community’s ritual actions;
(b) when taking up collections; (c)
when guiding offertory and communion
processions; (d) when handling emergencies;
(e) at dismissal and distribution of
materials;
(f) when straightening up in preparation
for next liturgy.
3. Recruiting head ushers for each Mass,
and communicating with them on a timely
basis to identify problems and work
out solutions.
