"But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach?"
The lector ministry facilitates Mary Seat of Wisdom’s public prayer in proclaiming God’s Word during Mass, by engaging the hearts and minds of parishioners and bringing the various elements of the Liturgy of the Word into harmony so that Christ speaks to the assembly fully, consciously, and actively through each lector. Understanding that the both the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist are the essential equal elements of the Mass, lectors proclaim the Word to the faithful in order for them to experience in the liturgy Christ, who "is present" in His Word, “since it is He Himself who speaks when Holy Scriptures are read in Church.” (Vatican Council II, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Art. 7)
Lectors range in age from high school students to senior citizens. All ministers receive training to proclaim scripture with great joy and energy, and using proper public speaking techniques. Ministers are guided in the careful and prayerful preparation of the scriptures through resources such as the lector's workbook. Annual workshops and/or evenings of reflections aid the lectors in fostering personal reflection and the spiritual growth that can come from a deeper understanding of God's Word. Ministers are scheduled on a rotating basis at the Mass of their choice.
